Overview
The RCUK/ALSG Generic Instructor Course (GIC) prepares healthcare professionals to become instructors on nationally recognised life support and emergency care courses, including ALS, EPALS, NLS and a range of ALSG courses such as APLS.
The GIC is a standardised national course, developed jointly by Resuscitation Council UK and the Advanced Life Support Group, which develops the teaching skills required to deliver high quality, consistent education to fellow healthcare professionals. The course is built on the principles of adult learning and covers lecture delivery, skills teaching, simulation and scenario facilitation, group discussions, assessment, and giving effective feedback.
The course blends pre-course online learning through the GIC virtual learning environment with two face-to-face days of interactive teaching, practice and observed teaching sessions. Assessment is continuous throughout the course, with structured feedback and support from experienced GIC faculty.
On successful completion, candidates become Instructor Candidates (IC) on their referring provider course and move on to teaching as part of the faculty under supervision on the way to full instructor status.
